CAPT Whitney "Whit" Proctor Thomas, USN (ret.), 80, of Pensacola, FL passed away Tuesday, December 17, 2013.
CAPT Thomas was born in Penn Yan, NY on March 31, 1933. Enlisting in the Navy in 1951, he progressed through the ranks and was selected as an Ensign beginning his commissioned career. Among other degrees he received his BA from Georgetown University and his Masters degree from George Washington University both in Washington, DC. After over 43 years of active duty service, he and Mary Ann retired to Pensacola with his mother, Lucille Thomas Moody who preceded him in death and his mother-in-law in 1995. Among other assignments he served with the 1st Marine Division R.U.N., Naval Sea Systems Command, the Bureau of Medicine and Surgery, Military Sea Lift Command and the Naval Board of Inspection and Survey. CAPT Thomas was the first officer assigned as Senior Medical Staff Officer at the US Transportation Command, Scott Air Force Base. His ship board duty included an attack transport and destroyer home ported in San Diego and Pearl Harbor and duty with allied forces in southern Europe. During his service he was awarded the Defense Superior Service Medal, Legion of Merit, Meritorious Service Medal, Joint Service Commendation Medal and the Navy Marine Corps Commendation Medal with combat "V" and numerous unit and campaign ribbons. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge and the Brotherhood of St. Andrews.
He is survived by his loving wife of 26 years, Mary Ann Thomas; son, David Thomas (Kim) and his family of Gonzalez, LA; daughters, Victoria Paxton (W. David) of Roanoke, VA and Tracy Thomas of Los Alamos, NM and their families; step-daughters, Deirdre Canton (Neil) of Tampa, FL and her family and Dena Eliades of Pensacola, FL.
Family members will receive friends between the hours of 9:30am - 11:30am Monday, December 23, 2013 at Harper-Morris Memorial Chapel.
Funeral Service will be held 12:30pm Monday, December 23, 2013 at Christ Episcopal Church with Fr. Neal Goldsborough officiating. Interment will follow at Barrancas National Cemetery with full military honors at 2:00pm. Anchors Aweigh. "Under Way Shift Colors"
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Christ Episcopa El Church.

“Whitney P. Thomas, son of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Moody of East Elm St., passed his physical at Rochester Thursday and boarded a bus for the Great Lakes Naval Training station to start basic navy training. His pal, Cpl. Fred Hopkins of Guyanoga, home on furlough, went to Rochester with him. Freddie has to return to service the 5th of this month. He has volunteered for duty in Korea with the Marines.” [2, 4, 5]
